Mustang Mach-E Battery Problem

Some Mustang Mach-E vehicles batteries are dying or indicating that the battery is dead, despite being fully charged.

A service bulletin was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on March 25th, which describes the situation in more technical terms. The 12-volt battery in the Mustang Mach-E vehicle actually discharges while undergoing its standard, high voltage charging process. The small battery in the vehicle actually drains while it is plugged in.

This battery issue with Mustang Mach-E affects vehicles built on or before February 3rd, Ford revealed in a statement. Ford Motor Company is currently touting the potential for one or multiple over-the-air software updates that will fix this problem shortly. Still, at the moment, this battery issue requires repair from a certified repair center or Ford dealer.

In March of this year, Ford notified more than 4,500 Ford Mach-E owners of this issue. Approximately 1,500 of these vehicles had already been distributed to customers. Additionally, Ford notified around 3,000 remaining Ford Mach-E customers that their shipment would be delayed to address the vehicles’ battery problem and software issues while also conducting additional quality control testing.

Performance Issues: Bad Software in Mustang Mach-E Vehicles

Ford released a bulletin regarding Mustang Mach-E battery problems, citing this issue may be related to the powertrain control module (PCM). The situation potentially stems from a glitch in the vehicle’s software. The software problem is causing the vehicle's battery to drain while it is plugged in and charging.

On March 2, Ford notified thousands of Mach-E customers they would be compensated for their patience as the company continued its quality checks. However, keep in mind this may not be your only option if your Mustang Mach-E vehicle qualifies under The Lemon Law.

Other Problems: Mustang Mach-E Loose Subframe Bolts

In addition, there are over 1,200 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles that are a part of another recall regarding loose subframe bolts. They suspect that these loose subframe bolts in Ford Mach-E vehicles may not have been tightened to specification when they were assembled.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration filed a technical service bulletin for this issue on March 4th, 2021.

What does this mean for Mustang Mach-E Drivers?

Loose subframe bolts on the Mustang Mach-E may threaten the vehicle's structural integrity and collision performance. This can noticeably increase the risk of injury for the driver and any passengers in the vehicle. Currently, Ford is in the process of notifying drivers and dealerships of this issue.
