chevy bolt fire recall

GM is expanding their current Chevrolet Bolt fire recall to now include all Chevy bolt vehicles. As of now, all Chevy Bolt electric vehicles (2017-2022) are under recall for having high-voltage battery packs which are at risk of catching fire.

This recall includes those Bolt EVs that may have received an earlier recall repair for the fire risk issue.

More Information on the Chevy Bolt Fire Recall

Chevy has begun replacing batteries for Chevy Bolt EV drivers and continues to work with their battery supplier to obtain more battery modules to help speed up the replacement process.

To prevent the problem from occurring in the interim, they have developed an advanced diagnostic software package that will remove parking and charging limitations on 2020 model year Bolt EV vehicles. This is intended to help and protect drivers as they work on continuing to produce replacement battery modules.

Chevy Bolt Fire Recall Expanded

This software will automatically limit your vehicle's maximum state of charge to 80%, which will allow you to safely resume:

  • Charging indoors overnight
  • Depleting your vehicle's battery below 70 miles (113 km) of range, resulting in greater overall vehicle range compared to GM's prior interim charging guidance
  • And parking indoors after charging

This software also contains new diagnostics designed to detect specific abnormalities that might indicate a rare battery issue in your Chevy Bolt vehicle.

The software update is now available for 2020 model-year Bolt EV vehicles.

Chevrolet highly recommends you schedule a service appointment at your preferred Chevrolet EV dealer to have the software installed. The service should take approximately 1-3 hours to complete. Until you have the software installed, we ask that you still follow our previous guidelines, which are outlined on our website: www.chevy.com/boltevrecall.

They further mention that this software update is not the final remedy of this problem. They will be notifying you and other Chevy Bolt EV drivers when replacement battery modules are available.

Recommendations from the Manufacturer

At this time, GM is asking all Chevrolet Bolt vehicle owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures, and to not charge the vehicles overnight.

While Chevrolet prepares for this recall, they recommend Bolt drivers take the following steps:

  • Set your vehicle to a 90 percent state of charge limitation while in Target Charge Level mode. Drivers can find instructions on how to do this at www.chevy.com/boltevrecall. If you can't make these changes or do not feel comfortable making these changes, you can visit your dealer to have them make these adjustments for you, free of charge.
  • Charge your vehicle more frequently and avoid depleting your battery below approximately 70 miles of the remaining range, anytime this is possible.
  • Park your vehicle outside immediately after charging and do not leave your vehicle charging indoors overnight.

They have further said that if you have questions or concerns that your dealer cannot resolve, contact the Chevrolet EV Concierge team at 833-EVCHEVY (833-382-4389). Their lines are open Monday through Friday, 8 AM-12 AM EST, or Saturday and Sunday, 12-9 PM EST.
